Burundi map

Burundian cooking is closely tied to the country's fertile highlands and Lake Tanganyika. Bananas, cassava, sweet potatoes, maize, beans, rice, greens, and plantains provide much of the daily food, while fish and meat are used to add protein and variety.

Beans are particularly important and are often served with substantial starches, while banana-based dishes and leafy vegetable preparations reflect local agriculture. Around the lake, freshwater fish becomes more prominent, demonstrating how Burundi's food culture changes with geography.
