Continental Celts

Continental Celts map

The Continental Celts farmed their way through the European Iron Age on barley, wheat, oats, and emmer, ground into bread and porridge and, crucially, fermented into beer with a distinctive foam prized for making lighter, airier loaves. Cattle, sheep, and goats supplied meat and dairy, with archaeological evidence showing cheese and butter were everyday staples, while wild boar and deer supplemented the diet through hunting.

Feasting carried serious social weight in Celtic society, centered around communal cauldrons and roasting spits, with classical writers describing abundant roasted meat eaten by hand as both celebration and a display of a warrior culture's values. Honey served as the primary sweetener, and fermented apple drinks—an early ancestor of cider—rounded out a diet shaped as much by ritual and status as by simple nourishment.
