Ancient Greece

Ancient Greece map

Ancient Greek cuisine ran on what historians call the Mediterranean triad—grain, olives, and grapes—supplemented by cheese, fish, and whatever vegetables and legumes a household could grow. Bread and barley porridge were everyday staples, olive oil touched nearly everything, and wine, often diluted with water, was a fixture at both simple meals and the more elaborate symposium gatherings where food, wine, and conversation were treated as a unified social ritual.

Fish and seafood were prized along the coasts, while meat was reserved mostly for festivals and sacrifices to the gods, making it more of an occasional luxury than a daily habit. Greek writers like Archestratus even composed early food criticism, cataloguing the best regional ingredients across the Mediterranean—an early sign of just how seriously the Greeks took the pleasures of the table.
