Method
- Combine the flour, yeast, sugar and salt in a large bowl.
- Add the warm water and olive oil, mixing to form a soft dough.
- Knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled.
- Gently deflate the dough and shape into a round loaf.
- Place on a baking tray, cover, and let rise a further 30-40 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Brush the top with beaten egg and score a cross or decorative pattern on top.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until deeply golden and hollow-sounding when tapped.
