Cultural Background: Cultural Background The BLT emerged in the United States in the early 20th century as club sandwiches and diner culture grew, becoming one of the most ordered sandwiches in American history by the 1960s. Its simplicity — crisp bacon, cool lettuce and juicy summer tomatoes between toasted bread — reflects the American diner tradition of turning humble ingredients into an enduring favourite.
Tips: Use the ripest, most flavourful tomatoes you can find — this is what makes or breaks a BLT. Pat the bacon dry after frying so the sandwich doesn't become soggy.
Variations: Add sliced avocado for a California-style BLT. Vegetarian version: substitute bacon with pan-fried smoked tempeh or coconut bacon strips.
Storage: Best eaten fresh; not recommended for storage as the bread will become soggy. Components (cooked bacon) can be refrigerated separately for up to 3 days.
Reheating: If reheating bacon separately, warm in a dry pan over medium heat for 1–2 minutes; assemble the sandwich fresh.
FAQs:
Q: What bread works best?
A: Classic white sandwich bread or sourdough both work well; the bread should be sturdy enough to hold the fillings.
Q: Can I make it ahead for a packed lunch?
A: Pack the components separately and assemble just before eating to prevent sogginess.
