Woven Grass Table Whisk (Ekiyiko)
Uganda and the wider African Great Lakes region

A small, tightly bound whisk of dried grass or plant fiber used for light beating and mixing tasks — blending sauces, working ghee or butter, and mixing smaller quantities than the larger palm rib whisk is suited for.
Material & Construction
Fine dried grass stems or fibrous plant material are gathered into a compact bundle and bound at the handle end, left loose and slightly splayed at the working end, generally smaller and finer than the West African palm rib whisk.
Traditional Uses
Blending groundnut sauce, working softened butter or ghee smooth, and mixing sauces where a fine, gentle whisking action is preferred over the coarser palm rib whisk's heavier texture.
Modern Availability / Equivalents
A small wire whisk or fork serves the same practical purpose; the grass whisk itself is now more often found in rural households and craft markets than everyday urban kitchens.
Care & Maintenance
Air-dry after use and store away from damp; as with other fiber tools it is treated as low-cost and periodically replaced rather than repaired once the binding loosens.
