Turkey Baster
United States

A large syringe-like tool with a squeeze bulb, used to draw up hot pan drippings and redistribute them over roasting meat, most associated with basting a whole turkey during holiday cooking.
Material & Construction
A clear glass or plastic tube with a rubber or silicone squeeze bulb at one end, sized to hold several ounces of liquid per draw.
Traditional Uses
Drawing up hot fat and juices pooled in a roasting pan and squeezing them back over the surface of roasting meat to keep it moist and aid browning.
Modern Availability / Equivalents
A large metal spoon can substitute for basting, though less precisely; turkey basters remain inexpensive and widely sold, especially around major roasting holidays.
Care & Maintenance
Disassemble and wash thoroughly after each use, since fat residue trapped inside the tube can harbor bacteria if not cleaned fully.
