Silicone Spatula
Global — a late-20th-century industrial development with no single regional origin
A flexible, heat-resistant spatula molded from food-grade silicone rubber, representing one of the few genuinely modern (rather than historically evolved) utensils in this Atlas, now among the most widely owned kitchen tools worldwide.
Material & Construction
A molded silicone head, often reinforced internally, fitted to a plastic, wood, or metal handle; silicone's flexibility and heat resistance (typically to 200–260°C) distinguish it from the wooden and metal spatulas documented in regional entries.
Traditional Uses
General-purpose stirring, folding, and scraping across virtually every cuisine, valued particularly for scraping bowls completely clean and for use on non-stick cookware that metal tools would scratch.
Modern Availability / Equivalents
This is itself the current global standard for many general-purpose stirring and scraping tasks, having become a near-universal kitchen staple within a few decades of its introduction.
Care & Maintenance
Dishwasher-safe in most cases; inspect periodically for surface tears or the silicone pulling away from the handle joint, a common failure point after extended heavy use.
Included here as a documented case of a single modern design displacing multiple regional traditional tools for general-purpose use, in contrast to the historically evolved items that make up most of this Atlas.
