Sil Batta Hand Stone

Indian subcontinent broadly

The smaller hand-held grinding stone used against a larger flat stone slab (the sil) to grind spices, chutneys and pastes by a rolling or crushing motion.

Material & Construction

A dense, smooth stone shaped by wear and selection rather than carving, sized to be gripped and rolled or pressed with both hands.

Traditional Uses

Grinding wet spice pastes, chutneys, and masalas directly on the slab, a technique still preferred by many cooks for the texture it produces over an electric grinder.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

An electric spice or wet grinder has replaced this two-stone system in most urban households, though the technique persists in traditional and rural kitchens for specific dishes.

Care & Maintenance

Rinse and air-dry without soap, which can be absorbed into the porous stone and taint subsequent grinding.

Companion tool to the sil slab; the two are always used as a pair.
