Molinillo
Mexico

A carved wooden whisk with loose, free-spinning rings around a grooved shaft, rolled rapidly between the palms to froth hot chocolate to a light, aerated foam.
Material & Construction
Turned from a single piece of hardwood, with one or more loose carved rings left free to spin around the central shaft below a textured, grooved section.
Traditional Uses
Rolling the handle briskly between both palms while held in a pot of hot chocolate, the spinning rings whipping air into the liquid to build a thick foam.
Modern Availability / Equivalents
An electric milk frother approximates the result faster but without the ritual; genuine molinillos remain widely sold and used throughout Mexico.
Care & Maintenance
Rinse and air-dry without soap, which the porous wood can absorb and pass into the next batch of chocolate.
