Chinese Dowel Rolling Pin

China

A short, thin, straight rolling pin with no handles, used to roll individual dumpling and wonton wrappers to a specific thin, slightly domed shape by hand.

Material & Construction

A single piece of hardwood, small enough to be rolled with one hand while the other hand rotates the dough, typically shorter than a Western rolling pin.

Traditional Uses

Rolling small individual portions of dough into thin circular wrappers, using a one-handed rocking motion combined with rotating the dough with the other hand.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

A short section cut from a standard rolling pin, or a wine bottle, are common informal substitutes; dedicated versions are sold in Asian grocery stores.

Care & Maintenance

Wipe with a dry cloth; avoid soaking to prevent warping of the small, thin dowel shape.
