Chimta

Indian subcontinent broadly

Long-handled flat metal tongs used to flip and handle roti, chapati, and other flatbreads directly on a hot tawa griddle or over an open flame.

Material & Construction

A single piece of flat spring steel, bent at the midpoint so the two arms naturally spring apart, with no separate hinge or pin.

Traditional Uses

Flipping flatbread on the griddle, and holding bread directly over an open flame for the final puffing and light charring stage of cooking.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

Standard kitchen tongs can substitute, though the chimta's flat, wide grip is specifically suited to handling thin flatbread without tearing it.

Care & Maintenance

Wipe clean and dry after use; being plain steel, occasional light oiling of the spring bend keeps the action smooth and prevents rust.
