Belan

Indian subcontinent broadly (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka)

A tapered wooden rolling pin used with a matching flat board (chakla) to roll out chapati, roti, and paratha dough, sized shorter and often thinner than Western rolling pins.

Material & Construction

Carved from a single piece of hardwood, tapered slightly at both ends to allow fine control while rolling round flatbreads by hand.

Traditional Uses

Rolling portioned balls of dough into thin, even rounds for daily flatbread, using a rotating hand motion distinct from the back-and-forth stroke used with Western pins.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

A standard Western rolling pin can substitute with practice, though achieving a perfectly round shape is easier with a belan's shorter, tapered form.

Care & Maintenance

Wipe with a dry cloth and avoid prolonged soaking; light oiling occasionally prevents the wood from drying out and cracking.
