First Impressions

The Royal Arcade is exactly the kind of place I'd rather discover by wandering than deliberately seeking out - Victorian architecture, a glass roof, independent shops, cafes and small boutiques with loads of character. It's much prettier than an ordinary shopping street.

The Scenery

The Royal Arcade dates from 1858 and is Cardiff's oldest surviving arcade.

What You'll See

Victorian architecture, ornamental details, a glass roof, independent shops, cafes and historic storefronts.

Best Photo Opportunities

The glass roof, the arcade entrance, shopfronts, architectural details and the view down the length of the arcade.

Seasonal Appeal

It's particularly useful during wet Cardiff weather because you can explore somewhere beautiful while staying dry.

Sounds & Surroundings

Much quieter than the main shopping streets, with conversations and the sounds of the individual cafes and shops.

Getting There

Right in the city centre and easy to reach on foot, with city-centre parking nearby.

Would I Visit Again?

Definitely - it's the sort of place I'd happily wander through whenever I'm in central Cardiff.

Final Verdict

Royal Arcade is a worthwhile stop because it combines Cardiff's Victorian character with independent shopping and cafes in a wonderfully compact space.
