First Impressions

Friar's Bush is one of those places that feels completely hidden despite being quite close to the city centre - ancient stone walls, a Gothic entrance, old gravestones, mature greenery and very peaceful surroundings. It felt incredibly quiet - you can almost forget you're in Belfast.

The Scenery

The attraction here is the combination of age, greenery and historic gravestones rather than sweeping scenery.

What You'll See

Ancient gravestones, Gothic gate lodge, historic walls, Friar's Stone, mature trees and historic burial grounds. Friar's Bush is thought to be Belfast's oldest Christian burial ground, possibly with pre-Christian origins, and contains a mass grave associated with victims of Belfast's cholera epidemics.

Best Photo Opportunities

Gothic entrance, Friar's Stone, old gravestones and tree-lined sections.

Seasonal Appeal

Spring and summer make the greenery especially attractive, while autumn gives the graveyard a wonderfully atmospheric feel.

Sounds & Surroundings

Mostly birds, wind and the distant sounds of the surrounding city.

Getting There

Metro 8A-B runs from Belfast city centre to Botanic Gardens. There is no dedicated parking. Access is currently by appointment rather than simply walking through whenever you like.

Would I Visit Again?

Yes. I'd like to spend more time looking at the older graves and learning about the people buried there.

Final Verdict

Friar's Bush Graveyard is a worthwhile stop because it offers a remarkably quiet glimpse into Belfast's much older history.
