Crumlin Road Gaol

First Impressions

Arriving at Crumlin Road Gaol is quite an experience because the building looks imposing before you've even gone inside - huge Victorian prison buildings, heavy stone walls and gates, historic surroundings and a surprisingly well-presented visitor entrance. I immediately felt like I was somewhere with a lot of stories attached to it.

The Scenery

This obviously isn't somewhere you visit for traditional scenery. The architecture and historic interiors are the attraction.

What You'll See

Victorian prison architecture, historic cells, the Governor's corridor, C-Wing, hanging cell, underground tunnel, prison yard and graveyard, and original prison fittings and structures.

Best Photo Opportunities

The main entrance and gates, Centre Circle, and the prison corridors and cells.

Seasonal Appeal

The gaol works well year-round because almost the entire experience is indoors. I'd actually choose a miserable Belfast day for this one because you don't need good weather to enjoy it.

Sounds & Surroundings

The experience is predominantly about the building itself, with audiovisual material incorporated into the current self-guided experience.

Getting There

Metro services 57 and 12B stop outside the gaol, with a Sunday 12A service usable from Carlisle Circus. Parking is available on site including disabled parking. It's relatively close to the city centre by Belfast standards, but not somewhere I'd necessarily walk carrying shopping.

Would I Visit Again?

Yes. There is so much history packed into the building that I think I'd notice things I'd missed the first time.

Crumlin Road Gaol is a must-visit destination because the building itself brings Belfast's history to life in a way that photographs simply can't.
