Castell Coch

First Impressions

Castell Coch genuinely looks like something from a fairytale - turrets everywhere, a forested hillside, red stone, Gothic details and a dramatic setting. I honestly couldn't stop taking pictures of it, it's almost ridiculously pretty.

The Scenery

The present castle is a Victorian creation built around medieval remains, heavily influenced by the imagination of architect William Burges.

Fairytale towers, elaborately decorated interiors, forested surroundings, Gothic architecture, Victorian furnishings, decorative ceilings and beautiful views over the surrounding woodland.

The exterior from the approach, the main towers, the courtyard, the forest surroundings, and the castle viewed from below.

Seasonal Appeal

Autumn would be my favourite time because of the woodland surrounding the castle - summer gives you greener scenery, while winter can make the castle look particularly dramatic.

Sounds & Surroundings

The woodland makes it surprisingly quiet - you can hear birds and the wind through the trees rather than much city noise.

Getting There

Bus services operate towards Tongwynlais, and parking is available nearby.

Would I Visit Again?

Absolutely - it's one of those places that feels almost unreal when you're standing outside it.

Final Verdict

Castell Coch is a must-visit destination because it is probably the closest thing Cardiff has to a real-life fairytale castle.
