St Anne's is enormous when you're standing in front of it. The Romanesque architecture gives it a very solid, imposing appearance, particularly against the more modern buildings of the Cathedral Quarter - it feels incredibly grand but also surprisingly peaceful considering how central it is.

The cathedral's foundation stone was laid in 1899, with the nave consecrated in 1904; construction continued for decades.
