Whisky/Whiskey Family
Single Malt Scotch
Scotland
40–46%+
Typical ABV

Made from 100% malted barley at a single distillery, pot-distilled, aged a minimum of 3 years in oak (in practice, usually much longer). Regional character varies significantly: Speyside is typically elegant, fruity, often sherry-cask-influenced; Islay is famous for intensely smoky, peaty whisky from malt dried over peat-fired kilns; the Highlands run broad and varied, from light and floral to fuller-bodied; the Lowlands are typically lighter and gentler, often triple-distilled; and Campbeltown, a small historic region, has a distinctive briny, robust character.
Profile
Varies by region: fruity to intensely smoky/peaty.
Islay Scotch with smoked salmon is a classic pairing.
