01 The Arrival

The Passage House Inn has a lovely waterside feel and immediately feels like somewhere I'd want to spend an afternoon. It's traditional without feeling dated, and the location gives the whole place a very relaxed character.

02 The Food

I ordered the beer-battered fish and chips, while we shared crispy whitebait to start, with the day's pudding special for dessert. The fish and chips were exactly what I'd hoped for - crisp beer batter, flaky fish, chunky chips and proper mushy peas. The whitebait were lovely and crunchy with tartare sauce.

03 The Experience

Friendly and relaxed service gave the meal an unhurried feel. The waterside location is the big attraction - there's something particularly nice about seafood while surrounded by the river and boats.

04 Was It Worth It?

Good. Portions are generous and the setting makes the meal feel like an occasion.

05 The Verdict

Pros: waterside location, seafood, generous portions, relaxed atmosphere. Cons: a little outside central Exeter. Note: this venue is in Topsham rather than Exeter city itself. Perfect for a leisurely meal when you're happy to travel slightly outside the city centre.
