Restaurant Review
The Buttery
A grand, traditional Scottish dining room ideal for a proper special-occasion meal.
01 The Arrival
The Buttery's décor is part of the experience — tartan carpet, dark wood, traditional detailing and slightly old-fashioned grandeur that make it feel wonderfully different from more modern Glasgow restaurants, with loads of character and nothing pretentious about it.
02 The Food
Recent diners have praised dishes including venison, the Marie Rose fish cocktail with prawns, lobster, smoked salmon and crayfish, wood pigeon and traditional Scottish desserts, alongside a strong cocktail and wine list. The venison is particularly highly praised, seafood starters are generous and beautifully presented, and old-school finishing touches like tablet and shortbread round out a menu built for taking your time over several courses.
03 The Experience
Service is one of The Buttery's biggest strengths — staff are warm, professional and genuinely attentive, giving a real sense of being looked after rather than processed through a dining room. The atmosphere is warm, nostalgic and cosy, ideal for birthdays, anniversaries and family occasions, or a long lunch that loses track of time.
04 Was It Worth It?
It's expensive compared with a casual meal, but the experience is much closer to a special-occasion restaurant, and the quality of food, service and setting makes the higher price easier to justify.
05 The Verdict
Beautiful traditional décor, excellent Scottish food, exceptional service, generous portions and a memorable atmosphere — one for a bigger occasion if watching the budget. It has the kind of timeless quality that makes it a restaurant you want to introduce to people.
