01 The Arrival

The Ship Inn is exactly the sort of old-fashioned pub I love finding in a city centre. From the outside it has loads of character, and once inside you're surrounded by old beams, cosy corners and plenty of traditional pub atmosphere. It feels historic without feeling stuffy, and the whole place has a really welcoming, lived-in quality.

02 The Food

I went for the steak and ale pie with chips and vegetables, followed by the sticky coffee pudding with ice cream. The steak and ale pie was exactly what I wanted from a traditional Exeter pub - rich gravy, tender beef and lovely pastry. The chips were crisp on the outside and fluffy inside, and there was plenty of food on the plate. The sticky coffee pudding was a bit unexpected but absolutely delicious.

03 The Experience

The service was friendly and relaxed. Nothing felt rushed, but everything was handled efficiently. The historic interior, wooden beams and cosy lighting make it wonderfully atmospheric, with genuine character rather than a modern pub imitating one.

04 Was It Worth It?

Very good. Portions are generous and the prices feel reasonable for a proper sit-down pub meal.

05 The Verdict

Pros: historic atmosphere, generous portions, comforting food, great pub character. Cons: can feel quite busy at popular times. Anyone who loves traditional British pubs would enjoy the Ship - particularly good for a cosy lunch or dinner when you want somewhere with a bit of history.
