Introduction: Fragrant, lightly spiced Arabic coffee flavoured with cardamom and saffron, an essential part of Qatari hospitality.
Cultural Background: Gahwa holds deep cultural significance in Qatar, traditionally served to guests in small cups alongside dates as an immediate gesture of welcome, its light, aromatic character quite distinct from stronger Western-style coffee.
Tips: Simmer gently rather than boiling hard, to keep the coffee's delicate aroma intact. Serve in small quantities, as is customary — guests are often served multiple small refills rather than one large cup.
Variations: Adjust the cardamom quantity to taste, as some prefer a stronger spice presence. Omit the saffron for a simpler, everyday version.
Storage: Best made fresh; not suitable for storing.
Reheating: Reheat gently on the stovetop if needed, without over-boiling.
FAQs:
Q: Why is gahwa served in such small cups?
A: It's a strong, aromatic coffee meant to be sipped slowly and enjoyed over conversation, often with multiple small refills as part of the hospitality ritual.
Q: Is gahwa the same as Turkish coffee?
A: No, gahwa is typically lighter in roast and flavoured with cardamom and sometimes saffron, quite different from the darker, thicker Turkish style.
