Description: An equal-parts Scotch cocktail that's neither bloody nor sandy — smooth, fruity and surprisingly gentle for a whisky drink.

Cultural Background: Named for the 1922 Rudolph Valentino bullfighting film of the same name, and first published that same year in Harry MacElhone's cocktail book.

Tips: Fresh orange juice makes a real difference here — bottled juice tends to flatten the drink.

Variations: A dash of orange bitters can sharpen the finish for those who find it too soft.

Serving Suggestion: Serve up, well chilled, as an approachable entry point into Scotch cocktails.

Q: What's Cherry Heering?
A: A Danish cherry liqueur with a deep, slightly tart cherry flavor — not the same as maraschino liqueur.
