Potjie Pot

South Africa (Afrikaner and broader South African tradition)

A round, three-legged cast iron pot with a tight-fitting, slightly domed lid, designed to stand directly over coals rather than on a stovetop or in an oven.

Material & Construction

Cast iron, often quite thick-walled for even heat retention over an open fire.

Traditional Uses

Slow communal cooking (potjiekos) over wood coals, typically layered with meat, vegetables, and aromatics added without stirring as the dish cooks over several hours.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

Widely sold in South Africa in graded sizes (numbered by capacity); outside South Africa, a camp Dutch oven with legs is the closest direct equivalent.

Care & Maintenance

Season like any bare cast iron piece — clean, dry thoroughly, and apply a thin oil coating after use to prevent rust; avoid soap on a well-seasoned pot.

This pot is built specifically around the potjie/bredie slow-cooking technique.
