Central/South America
Budare
Venezuela, Colombia

A flat, round griddle, similar in function to the Mexican comal, used specifically to cook arepas, the cornmeal flatbread central to Venezuelan and Colombian cuisine.
Material & Construction
Traditionally cast iron or clay; modern versions are commonly steel or nonstick-coated metal.
Traditional Uses
Cooking arepas, achieving the characteristic browned, slightly crisp exterior while the interior remains soft.
Modern Availability / Equivalents
Widely available through Venezuelan and Colombian kitchenware suppliers; a flat griddle or heavy skillet serves an equivalent function.
Care & Maintenance
Season bare metal versions; nonstick versions follow standard nonstick care.
Structurally very similar to the Mexican comal — flat griddles independently associated with different regional staple foods (tortillas versus arepas).
