Ingredients
- - 2 oz rye whiskey
- - 1/4 oz simple syrup
- - 3 dashes Peychaud's bitters
- - Absinthe, for rinsing the glass
Method
- Rinse a chilled rocks glass with absinthe and discard the excess.
- Stir whiskey, syrup, and bitters with ice in a separate mixing glass.
- Strain into the prepared glass (no ice).
Description: New Orleans' signature cocktail — rye whiskey and bitters in an absinthe-rinsed glass.
Garnish: Lemon twist (expressed over the glass, then discarded)
Note: Often cited as one of America's oldest known cocktails, dating to 1850s New Orleans.
