Introduction: The Mojito, a highball of white rum, lime, sugar, mint and soda water, is Cuba's most globally recognised cocktail,
with roots traced to 19th-century Havana bars where sailors and dockworkers mixed rum with fresh lime and mint.
Cultural Background: The Mojito, a highball of white rum, lime, sugar, mint and soda water, is Cuba's most globally recognised cocktail,
with roots traced to 19th-century Havana bars where sailors and dockworkers mixed rum with fresh lime and mint.
Its clean, refreshing profile made it a favourite well beyond the island, but the classic preparation, gently muddled
rather than crushed, remains rooted in traditional Havana bartending technique.
Tips: Muddle gently — over-muddling the mint releases bitter chlorophyll and makes the drink taste grassy. Use fresh lime juice rather than bottled for the correct bright, authentic flavour.
Variations: A version substituting dark rum gives a deeper, slightly molasses-forward flavour. A non-alcoholic 'virgin mojito' omits the rum and adds extra soda water. Already fully plant-based as written.
Storage: Best made fresh and consumed immediately; not suitable for advance preparation.
Reheating: Not applicable — served cold.
