Introduction: Conch fritters are the Bahamas’ most famous bite-sized snack, sold from roadside shacks and beach bars across the islands.
Cultural Background: Conch fritters are the Bahamas’ most famous bite-sized snack, sold from roadside shacks and beach bars across the islands. Diced conch is folded into a peppery, well-seasoned batter and deep-fried until crisp, then served with a tart dipping sauce.
Tips: Tenderise conch by pounding it lightly before dicing — this keeps fritters tender rather than rubbery.
Variations: Some versions add a splash of coconut milk to the batter for a subtly sweet flavour. Cracked conch batter (thicker, flattened) can be used for a different texture.
Vegetarian/Vegan: No authentic vegetarian or vegan conversion exists for this dish; none has been forced.
Storage: Refrigerate cooked fritters in an airtight container up to 2 days.
Reheating: Reheat in an oven or air fryer at 190°C (375°F) for 5-6 minutes to restore crispness; avoid microwaving.
