Cultural Background: America's most popular salad dressing and dip, ranch was created in the 1950s by Steve Henson at Hidden Valley Ranch in California, its buttermilk-herb base becoming a ubiquitous condiment far beyond its original salad-dressing purpose.
Tips: • Fresh herbs make a noticeable difference over dried for the brightest flavour. • Adjust buttermilk quantity for a thicker dip or thinner pourable dressing consistency.
Variations: • Add a dash of hot sauce for a spicy ranch variation. • Use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a tangier, lighter version.
Storage: Refrigerate in an airtight container up to 1 week.
Reheating: Not applicable; served cold. Nutrition (per serving) Approx. 75 kcal, 0.5 g protein, 7.5 g fat, 1 g carbohydrate per 15 ml serving. FAQs What is ranch traditionally used for? Salad dressing, a dip for vegetables and wings, and a widely popular all-purpose condiment across American cuisine. Can I use dried herbs instead of fresh? Yes, though fresh herbs give a noticeably brighter flavour; use about a third the quantity if substituting dried.
