Absinthe

France/Switzerland, part of the anise-flavored spirit family

Has a notorious (and largely outdated) reputation, driven by early-20th-century bans across much of Europe and the US based on now-discredited fears about the compound thujone (present in wormwood, one of absinthe's traditional botanicals). Modern research suggests thujone levels in properly made absinthe were never high enough to cause the effects once feared, and it's legal again in most countries.

Profile

Anise-forward, like other members of the anise-flavored spirit family; louches when watered.
