Kava Strainer

Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, and the wider Pacific kava tradition

A woven fiber strainer used to filter pounded kava root fiber out of water during the preparation of the ceremonial and social beverage kava.

Material & Construction

Woven from hibiscus bark fiber or a similar plant material into a cloth-like mesh bag, traditionally prepared specifically for this purpose.

Traditional Uses

Straining mixed kava root and water through the woven bag, squeezing repeatedly to extract the beverage's active compounds while filtering out coarse fiber.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

A fine cloth or nylon mesh bag has become a common modern substitute, particularly outside contexts where the traditional woven fiber is not readily available.

Care & Maintenance

Rinse thoroughly after each use and air-dry fully; a strainer left damp between preparations can develop mold or an off odor that affects the next batch.
