Ice Cream Scoop

United States

A hand-held scoop with a curved bowl, used to portion firm ice cream into rounded servings; the mechanical release-lever version is generally credited to Alfred L. Cralle, an American inventor who patented an early design in 1897.

Material & Construction

A metal bowl, often with a release mechanism — a sweeping blade, spring lever, or heat-conducting fluid-filled handle — designed to cleanly release a portioned scoop.

Traditional Uses

Portioning firm, frozen ice cream into individual rounded servings without the scoop getting stuck or the ice cream sticking to the bowl.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

This is itself the modern global standard tool for the task, with numerous mechanical variations now manufactured and sold worldwide.

Care & Maintenance

Hand-wash and dry; mechanical lever versions should be checked periodically for a clean, unobstructed release action.

Alfred L. Cralle's 1897 patent for a self-releasing ice cream scoop is a documented, named invention — one of relatively few kitchen utensils in this Atlas with a specific credited inventor.
