Bombilla

Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil

A metal straw with a perforated or filtered bulb at the submerged end, used to drink yerba mate directly from the gourd it's brewed in while filtering out the loose leaves.

Material & Construction

Traditionally silver or alpaca metal, with a flattened, perforated spoon-like bulb at one end that filters leaf matter as the drinker sips.

Traditional Uses

Sipping mate directly from the gourd, shared among a group who pass the same gourd and bombilla around in a structured social ritual.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

Stainless steel bombillas with a built-in fine mesh filter are the standard modern version, widely available anywhere mate culture has spread.

Care & Maintenance

Rinse thoroughly after each use, and periodically disassemble filtered versions to clear trapped leaf particles from the fine perforations.
