Satay Fan

Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand

A simple hand fan used to fan charcoal while grilling satay and other skewered meats, both to keep the coals at an even high heat and to manage smoke and flare-ups from dripping marinade.

Material & Construction

Woven palm leaf, bamboo, or occasionally cardboard, in a flat paddle or folding shape, inexpensive and often treated as disposable.

Traditional Uses

Fanning coals continuously while grilling to maintain even heat and control smoke, a hands-on technique considered part of achieving properly charred, evenly cooked satay.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

An electric fan or a folded piece of cardboard are common informal substitutes; woven versions remain standard at street-food satay stalls.

Care & Maintenance

Air-dry if it gets damp; treated as low-cost and easily replaced once scorched or worn out from direct proximity to the grill.
