Kalchul

Indian subcontinent broadly

A large, deep serving ladle used to portion curry, dal, and other liquid or semi-liquid dishes from a serving pot onto individual plates.

Material & Construction

Stainless steel or, traditionally, brass or bronze, with a deep rounded bowl and a long handle, often finished with a decorative hook or loop for hanging storage.

Traditional Uses

Serving curries, lentils, and gravies at the table, sized to portion a generous single serving in one scoop for communal or family-style meals.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

Any standard Western soup ladle is functionally equivalent; the kalchul is distinguished mainly by its deep bowl proportion suited to thicker gravies.

Care & Maintenance

Standard metal-ladle care; brass and bronze versions benefit from occasional polishing to prevent tarnish.
