Gebeta Mareshiya (Winnowing Fan)

Ethiopia and Eritrea

A shallow, flat, round or fan-shaped woven tray used to winnow grain — tossing it in the air so wind or a hand-fan motion separates lighter chaff from the heavier grain, most commonly teff destined for injera.

Material & Construction

Tightly woven from dried grass, straw, or thin reed strips in a coiled or plaited construction, producing a flexible but sturdy flat surface with a slightly raised rim.

Traditional Uses

Grain is tossed and tilted rhythmically on the fan so a breeze carries off the chaff while the cleaned grain resettles; also used to sun-dry small batches of grain or spices.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

Not commonly manufactured outside East Africa; a wide, shallow woven basket tray or a rimmed baking sheet used with a fan can approximate the winnowing motion for small home quantities.

Care & Maintenance

Keep dry and away from damp storage, since the woven grass construction is vulnerable to mold and insects; shake out and sun-air periodically even when not in active use.
