Espeto

Brazil

A long metal skewer, sword-like in scale, used both to cook meat over an open flame in churrasco barbecue and to carve thin slices directly from the skewer tableside in the traditional rodízio serving style.

Material & Construction

A long, flat or rounded stainless steel rod, sturdy enough to hold a substantial quantity of meat and to be gripped and angled for tableside carving.

Traditional Uses

Skewering and roasting large cuts of meat over open flame, then serving by slicing thin portions directly from the skewer at the table in front of diners.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

A standard long metal skewer serves a similar cooking function; the tableside carving service itself is a specific Brazilian churrasco tradition without a true equivalent.

Care & Maintenance

Hand-wash and dry thoroughly; the long length requires careful storage to avoid bending.
