West African Fish Scaling Knife

West African coastal communities (Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria, and neighboring states)

A short, sturdy knife with a stiff blade used specifically for scaling, gutting, and cleaning fish at coastal and riverine markets and in home kitchens where fresh fish is a dietary staple.

Material & Construction

A short steel blade, often thicker and stiffer than a general paring knife to withstand scraping against fish scales, set into a simple handle that provides good grip when wet.

Traditional Uses

Scaling fish by scraping against the grain of the scales, followed by gutting and portioning; a dedicated tool kept separate from general vegetable and meat knives in households that process fish regularly.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

A Western fish-scaling knife or the back of a regular knife blade serves the same purpose; dedicated fish scalers (including non-knife serrated-disc tools) are also common substitutes.

Care & Maintenance

Rinse thoroughly after use to remove fish residue and scales, dry fully, and oil carbon-steel blades to prevent the rust that fish handling accelerates.
