Somali/Horn of Africa Curved Paring Knife (Mindi)

Somalia, Djibouti, and the wider Horn of Africa

A small, often slightly curved short-bladed knife used for fine, close-in prep work — peeling fruit, trimming meat, and detailed vegetable work — the regional equivalent of a Western paring knife.

Material & Construction

A short steel blade, sometimes with a gentle curve toward the tip, set into a simple wood, horn, or plastic handle; older versions were frequently locally forged.

Traditional Uses

Peeling and detail-cutting fruit and vegetables, trimming fat and sinew from meat, and other close, controlled cutting tasks that a larger knife is too unwieldy for.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

A Western paring knife is directly equivalent in size and function and has become the more common tool in urban kitchens across the region.

Care & Maintenance

Hand-wash, dry, and store point-protected; because the blade is short and often kept very sharp for fine work, it is usually stored separately from larger kitchen knives to avoid dulling the edge against them.
