Bamboo Steamer

China

A stackable, woven bamboo basket with a fitted lid, used to steam food in multiple tiers simultaneously over a pot of boiling water, most closely associated with dim sum preparation.

Material & Construction

Woven bamboo, lightweight and naturally absorbing excess moisture from steam, which many cooks believe produces better results than a metal steamer's tendency to drip condensation back onto food.

Traditional Uses

Steaming dumplings, buns, vegetables, and fish; multiple tiers can steam different dishes simultaneously over one pot of water.

Modern Availability / Equivalents

Widely available internationally in various sizes; metal steamer baskets serve a similar function though without bamboo's specific moisture-absorbing properties.

Care & Maintenance

Air dry thoroughly after each use to prevent mold given the material's porosity; avoid submerging in water for extended periods.
