Introduction: Crisp, golden fritters packed with tender chopped conch and Caribbean seasoning.

Cultural Background: Conch is harvested from the shallow reefs around Saint Kitts and Nevis and has long been part of coastal cooking. Fritters are the most popular way to enjoy it, served at beach bars and family gatherings as a well-loved starter.

Tips: Tenderise the conch by pounding it gently before chopping, as it can be tough otherwise. Keep the oil temperature steady for even, non-greasy frying.

Variations: Substitute chopped shrimp for conch if unavailable; add a squeeze of lime to the batter for extra brightness.

Storage: Store cooled fritters in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Reheating: Reheat in a hot oven or air fryer for 5-6 minutes to restore crispness; avoid microwaving as it softens the coating.

FAQs:

Q: Where can I buy conch outside the Caribbean?

A: Look for frozen conch meat at specialty seafood markets; thaw fully and pat dry before use.

Q: Can these be baked instead of fried?

A: They can be baked at 200°C (400°F) for about 15 minutes, though the texture will be softer than deep-fried.
