Description: A Prohibition-era cocktail named for the slang term for someone who flouts the law — fittingly, for drinking illegally at the time.
Cultural Background: Created at Harry's New York Bar in Paris in the mid-1920s after a Boston newspaper contest popularised the word "scofflaw" for Prohibition violators.
Tips: Real pomegranate grenadine, not the artificial version, makes a real difference to the balance here.
Variations: Bourbon can substitute for rye for a rounder, less spicy result.
Serving Suggestion: Serve up, well chilled, as a historically rooted rye sour.
Nutrition: Approx. 170 kcal per serving
