Description: A muddled, citrus-forward bourbon drink that splits the difference between a Whiskey Sour and a Mint Julep.
Cultural Background: Popularised in its modern form by bartender Dale DeGroff in the early 2000s, though "smashes" as a drink category date to the mid-1800s.
Tips: Muddle the mint gently — over-muddling releases bitter chlorophyll from the leaves.
Variations: Add muddled fresh peach or berries in summer for a fruitier twist.
Serving Suggestion: Serve over crushed or cracked ice for the coldest, most refreshing result.
Nutrition: Approx. 175 kcal per serving
FAQs:
Q: How is this different from a Mint Julep?
A: The Smash adds lemon juice, making it brighter and more citrus-driven than the purely spirit-and-mint Julep.
