Introduction: Dried, spiced mopane caterpillars, pan-fried or grilled until crisp, a traditional protein-rich snack found across northern and central Namibia.
Cultural Background: Mopane worms, the caterpillar of the emperor moth found on mopane trees, are a valued traditional food source across Southern Africa, harvested seasonally and prepared as a crunchy, savoury snack rich in protein.
Tips: Don't over-soak the worms, as they should retain some firmness rather than becoming too soft. Fry until nicely crisped for the best traditional texture.
Variations: Fry plain with just salt and chilli for a simpler, drier snack. Serve alongside oshifima as part of a fuller meal.
Storage: Refrigerate cooked mopane worms in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Reheating: Reheat in a dry pan over medium heat for a few minutes until warmed through and re-crisped.
