Cave Hill Country Park

First Impressions

Cave Hill is enormous compared with how close it feels to Belfast - huge green slopes, dramatic cliffs, woodland, Belfast stretching below and open countryside surprisingly close to the city. The view of Belfast from higher up is absolutely incredible.

The Scenery

This is one of Belfast's best places for scenery.

What You'll See

McArt's Fort, Cave Hill, five caves, Belfast Lough, Belfast city, woodland, heath and moorland, and wildflower-rich grassland. The park contains archaeological sites including a stone cairn, cashel and crannog, with McArt's Fort standing at almost 368 metres above sea level.

Seasonal Appeal

Spring and summer are lovely for greenery and wildflowers, autumn is gorgeous in the woodland, and winter can provide incredibly clear views although the exposed summit can be cold and muddy.

Sounds & Surroundings

Mostly wind, birds and the occasional sound of livestock. It's surprisingly easy to forget that Belfast is immediately below you.

Getting There

Metro services connect with entrances around the park, and several entrances have car parks. The Cavehill Trail is 7.2km with 256m of ascent and requires sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness.

Would I Visit Again?

Definitely. Cave Hill is one of those places where the views make the effort completely worthwhile.
