Restaurant Review
Hillmount – The Gardeners Rest
A garden-centre cafe with generous home cooking and a peaceful, green setting.
01 The Arrival
The Gardeners Rest is such a lovely place to stumble across. Being part of Hillmount means you're surrounded by plants and garden-centre greenery, which gives the cafe a really pleasant countryside feel despite being in Belfast.
02 The Food
I had a traditional roast beef dinner, followed by one of the homemade cakes, with tea and coffee. The roast beef was tender and generously portioned, with plenty of vegetables, potatoes and gravy - it felt like proper home cooking rather than a dressed-up version of it. The homemade dessert was gorgeous too.
03 The Experience
Friendly and efficient staff, with a very relaxed atmosphere. It's bright, comfortable and surrounded by greenery, with outdoor seating available as well - probably the biggest selling point.
04 Was It Worth It?
Excellent. Portions are generous and prices feel very reasonable for the amount of food.
05 The Verdict
Beautiful setting, generous portions, homemade desserts and excellent value, though it's outside the city centre so you'll need to travel a little. Perfect for brunch, lunch or a relaxed coffee and cake stop.
