01 The Arrival

Crave is on Exeter's Quayside, and the location immediately gives it a lovely relaxed feel. Inside it's modern without being cold, with warm lighting and a stylish but comfortable atmosphere - equally good for a casual lunch or a dressier evening.

02 The Food

We went for several small plates to share, including crispy chicken with gochujang honey, tempura tenderstem, braised beef tacos and tempura hake, plus a cocktail. The crispy chicken was my favourite, especially with the sweet-spicy gochujang honey. The beef tacos were tender and packed with flavour, and the tempura hake had a lovely crisp coating with delicate fish inside.

03 The Experience

The service was warm and attentive without being overbearing, with staff happy to explain dishes. The Quayside setting works brilliantly - contemporary and comfortable, with a relaxed rather than formal atmosphere.

04 Was It Worth It?

Good. The small plates mean the bill can creep up when everything sounds delicious, but the quality makes the experience worthwhile.

05 The Verdict

Pros: creative menu, excellent small plates, lovely setting, great cocktails. Cons: very easy to order too much. Perfect for people who like sharing food and trying several different flavours rather than committing to one main course.
